A valid question.
After all, a wedding photographer alone can range from $3,000 to $6,000 (sometimes pushing as much as $15,000 in more expensive areas of the country). The photographer will be there with you through the day, capturing all of your memories on several hundred photos, from which you can post on Facebook and print out your favorites.
So what makes a videographer so special?
Movement and audio.
Let’s take a look at a scenario…
Take John and Jane. Engaged. Married. Have kids. 10 years later, Little John and Little Jane ask questions about Mom & Dad’s wedding. “I’ll get those photos out from the basement!” says Jane, and hurriedly disappears downstairs, where, after hours of searching, dusting, and sneezing, she emerges with the wedding photo album. John and Jane sit down to a happy evening of reminiscing about their wedding, while showing photos to Little John and Little Jane.
“Who’s that?” asks Little John, pointing to a man wearing thick glasses. Jane frowns and tries to remember, but can’t come up with a name. No one can remember who Mr. Glasses was.
“Oh!” says John, looking at Jane. “Do you remember what your dad said when he gave that toast? Something about always being like glue, but the non-toxic kind? …what was that joke?” Neither John nor Jane can remember the joke during the toasts – after all, it was 10 years ago.
At the end of the album, Little Jane finds a photo of Jane dancing with her Grandfather. “Is that Great-Grandpa?” asks Little Jane – Jane nods. Little Jane never met her Great-Grandpa, he passed when she was two years old. The photo she holds is one of 3 in the wedding album including her Great-Grandpa. These photos show Little Jane what her Great-Grandpa looks like when he smiles for a photo, but nothing else.
Now let’s visit with Jack and Jill, a couple that have a strikingly similar story as John and Jane…
Jack and Jill fell in love. Engaged. Married. Have kids. It’s 10 years later, and Little Jack and Little Jill are also asking questions about their parents wedding. Jill smiles, and grabs the wedding video off the shelf.
The family spends the next hour or two watching moments from Jack and Jill’s wedding day. They hear the toasts. They remember old friends who left them “best wishes” on camera. Little Jill even sees her Great-Grandpa tear up the dance floor with some sweet moves. And most of all, they hear the vows they exchanged 10 years ago.
Video has the power to capture memories far beyond the reach of photography – through sound and movement. Instead of looking at a static image of a family member smiling for a posed photo, you can hear them talk and laugh – you can watch them walk and dance. This is why you should hire a Videographer – because your wedding day will only happen once, but you want to remember it forever.
