Not so long ago, nearly all wedding photo albums and videos looked the same. Times have changed though and the desire of each couple to have a unique and different style of wedding photography and videography has led to a lot of variety in which these are clicked and compiled. This is not to say that the traditional style of photography is not used but it has evolved and there are different sub-styles within a particular style of wedding photography and videography.
Each couple has to decide which particular style to use for a wedding coverage. Of course they should take the advice of the wedding coverage photography experts to have a better understanding of the different styles available. Having a look at the sample of each style of wedding coverage already done by the photographers is also a good idea.
There are no hard and fast rules that only one style has to be used. It is not even necessary to pick one style. You are free to choose a mix of different styles especially if you are going to hire wedding videography and photography professionals. It is important though, that you discuss the type of coverage you need with your wedding photographer and videographer well in advance of the wedding day so that they can prepare accordingly.
Popular styles of wedding photography and videography
Documentary or reportage style of wedding photography and videography
This style is also known as photo-journalistic wedding photography and is relatively new.
For the documentary type of coverage, instead of posed photos, photos are taken on the spur of the moment and spontaneously. The photographer tracks the wedding in an unobtrusive manner. If the wedding has been captured using a documentary style then very rarely will you come across a photo or a video shot of someone staring into the camera. Photos and videos of such weddings would not be similar to the conventional coverage. Documentary style of wedding photography and videography can have great results and the wedding looks very natural. At times, formal shots are also accommodated while doing reportage style of wedding photography and videography.
Portraiture or traditional style of wedding photography and videography
This is also known as classic or posed type of photography.
Coverage of this style of wedding photography and videography would look like your parent’s wedding photo album or videos. All the shots that are taken are posed shots. However, do not think that such wedding coverage can not provide creative and interesting results. This is where a great wedding photographer and videographer can make the difference and make the wedding coverage fun and creative, even if the style is Portraiture. Asking people to pose in an unconventional way or taking long shots (photographs and videos taken from a longer distance) can make a Portraiture style of wedding coverage interesting and a pleasure to go through with friends and family.
Fine Art type of wedding photography and videography
This type of wedding coverage is also known as fashion, illustrative or creative photography.
Fine Art type of wedding photography and videography gives the shooter leverage to infuse their own point of view of the wedding. Examples of this style of coverage are muted coverage or having a dreamier touch to the wedding coverage. Black and white photography and video affects fall into this category and so does shooting wedding photographs on film and then applying different effects when developing the photos. If you want to follow such a style of coverage you need to be very sure of the photographer’s and videographer’s ability and make it a point to review some samples of earlier work. It is common for couples to go in for fine art type of wedding coverage while also having a separate style for portrait sessions.
Edgy or Bold style of wedding photography and videography
This is a relatively new style of wedding coverage and is rarely used as an exclusive style of wedding coverage. This style, as the name suggests, has an edge and is not suitable for portraits.
Edgy and bold type of wedding photography has a new style of coverage like tilted angles of photographs and videos or photos having unconventional framing. Conventional angles are not used to cover the wedding. Most of the coverage done using this style is not appreciated by everyone. Having said that, some of the fine art style of wedding coverage has been borrowed from this edgy or blog style of wedding photography and videography.
