Congratulations, you’re engaged! If you’re reading this, you’ve probably hired or are about to hire a professional photographer to take pictures of you and your significant other, to commemorate the engagement. Here are some tips on what to expect and how to prepare for an engagement session.
Help Choose Locations – Most photographers will want to shoot in at least two different locations. Some couples like to have their pictures taken in a park or near a landmark like the Arch – you can also suggest locations meaningful to you as a couple. A favorite bar or restaurant, the place where you first met, the location of your first date or where the proposal happened, a family property, etc. The options are limitless!
Bring Multiple Outfits – Having more than one set of clothes lends the pictures more variety. It might get too hot, too windy, or too cold, and you’ll want to be prepared, especially if all of the photos are shot outside. Bring extra hairspray and whatever other accessories you’ll need. Make sure both of you bring extra clothes, because if it’s just one person and not both, the photos will still look a little repetitive.
Bring Props – Props are a great way to make engagement sessions fun, and the pictures unique! Blankets to sit on, signs that have the wedding date on them, big letters of the groom’s last initial, funny signs, etc. A common question is “does the photographer bring props?”. Normally props are specific and personal to each couple – what one couple may think is cheesy, another might find meaningful. Therefore, we leave the prop choices up to you!
Schedule Appropriately – A typical shoot will take at least one to two hours, especially with travel between two or more locations. But often, they’ll go longer than you expect. Try not to plan anything in your day too close to the engagement shoot, or else you’ll be stressing out, when you should be relaxed, taking it easy, and having fun! 🙂
Bringing Supplies – Water, snacks, good walking shoes, sunglasses, maybe an extra sweater depending on the time of year. A good mood is crucial to a successful engagement session, so bring whatever is necessary to ensure you and your fiancé aren’t hangry, thirsty, or uncomfortable.
Have Fun! – Let’s be honest: for some people, standing around being photographed is not their idea of a good time. It’s best to approach the sessions with a positive mindset, and know that getting these pictures are important, and that you should try your best to have fun, and make it fun for your future spouse!
Trust the Photographer – The photographer is experienced and knows what they’re doing, so don’t worry about what they’re doing. Focus on having a good time and interacting with your fiancé. Some of the poses the photographer suggests might seem odd, but trust us, they’ll look awesome in the photos!
With these tips in mind, you’re bound to have a fun, stress-free engagement session, with awesome photos to cherish forever!
