October is here! The season of hayrides, haunted houses, apple picking, and scary movies. If you’re planning your October wedding to be Halloween themed, you’ll need to have some awesome Halloween snacks at your reception. Here are some spooky ideas to get you started!
Punch Cauldron – Pour your punch into a large cauldron-looking container (these are easy to find at the store or online, if you don’t already have one from previous Halloween parties.) Then, for extra ambience, use dry ice to create a fog effect. Dry ice can be dangerous if touched, so be sure to follow proper safety precautions. To do this safely, you’ll need to place a punch bowl inside of a larger cauldron, and then line the space between the two bowls with smallish chunks of dry ice. This ensures the drink and the ice won’t come into contact. Or, if you want to be extra safe, store the dry ice in a separate container, placed strategically behind the cauldron!
Graveyard Cake/Brownies – Spruce up a simple chocolate cake or pan of brownies with some ghoulish decorations. Gummy worms, chocolate frosting soil, candy pumpkins, whipped cream ghosts with chocolate eyes, Nilla wafer tombstones. This is a good opportunity to get creative! (And any kids at the reception will really love this one. The more colorful and intricate, the better!)
Spaghetti Brains – This is a simple plate of spaghetti, served with two meatball “eyes” resting on a clump of spaghetti “brain”. Add tiny olives to the meatballs to complete the eye effect. And to go the extra mile, you can use food dye to make the noodles a funky brain color, like purple or pink.
Mummy Fingers – Dip pretzel sticks into white chocolate fudge to create a “mummy finger”, then add almond slices to the end to create the mummy’s fingernail! This is a tasty treat that’s easy to make in large amounts.
Vienna Fingers Ghosts – Take some Vienna Fingers cookies, (or another similarly shaped brand), dip them in white icing, add two chocolate chip eyes, and bam! Spooky cookie ghosts, ready for your guests to munch on.
Eyeballs – This is a classic dish from old Halloween party games. Prepare a bowl of peeled grapes or olives to serve as “eyeballs.” If you want to get fancy, you could even put olives on a piece of mozzarella cheese or a deviled egg.
Marshmallow Mouths – Create a set of teeth and lips with three simple ingredients. Take two apple slices and lather one side of each with peanut butter. Then, stand a row of mini-marshmallows on one apple slice, and then press the other slice on top. The peanut butter serves as an adhesive for this delicious, (nearly healthy) snack!
Hot Dog Mummies – This is just like making pigs in a blanket, except you wrap the dough around the meat like a mummy’s gauze. Be sure to make space at the end of the hot dog to put candy eyes!
Pumpkin and Guac – Put out a tray of chips and guacamole. But the twist: carve a pumpkin as the centerpiece, and pour the guacamole in a trail up to its mouth. As you can see from the photo, this is an adorably gross conversation piece that will have your guests laughing and snacking!
This is just the tip of the iceberg of spooky Halloween themed snacks! Your reception guests will appreciate the whimsy as well as the yummy food! Have fun, and Happy Halloween!
