It’s not every day you get to wear a wedding dress…obviously…so you may not know all the secrets and tricks to wearing one. You’d be surprised at how it differs from other dresses. So we’ve assembled this handy list to help you comfortably wear and wield your dress!
Back Handle – Many people struggle with the dress train while walking. What they should know is there’s a handle sewn into the back of most dresses. It’s usually underneath the train. You lift the handle and it lifts your train, allowing you to walk easier and avoid puddles or dirt. Boom! You’re welcome. 😉
Figure Out How to Hold the Dress – But some dresses don’t have the train handles! (Dun dun dun…) If that’s the case, you’ll want to have someone designated to hold your train for you during portrait sessions or just walking from place to place. We vote the Groom! It’s cute. (Or your Bride for any Bride-Bride weddings). But if he/she’s a no-go, then snag a bridesmaid to help. This circles back to a previous post – don’t be afraid to delegate and ask for favors. It’s your day, your time, and everyone will jump in to help if you ask – preferably nicely, of course. 😉
Learn How to Bustle the Dress Beforehand – Before the wedding, make time to learn how to bustle your dress. Every dress is different, so ask the dress seller for specific instructions on how to do yours. The seller will know – it’s what they do, they’re like Dress Jedi, or Dress Masters, or Dress Warriors, or whatever your flag is. If you can, practice with your mom, or bridesmaid, or your cat, or whoever else you’re planning on lacing you into the dress. This will save time on the wedding day! Similarly, make sure you know how to undo the dress. Well – ok, maybe you don’t need to know this. Your SO will figure it out! 😉
Wear Your Shoes and Dress Before the Wedding – This is maybe the most important tip. You ought to practice wearing your dress and shoes in order to ensure full comfort. It might feel silly, but whenever you have some alone time in the days before the wedding, dress up and walk around. We find it’s best to speak in a British accent while you do this. If you’re British already…then… maybe try French? (Or not.) Get a feel for how everything fits and how you can best move and sit. You don’t want to be one of those brides who trips on her heels when walking down the aisle! (For the record, we’ve never actually seen this happen – it’s a myth, you’ll be totally fine!)
Make Sure the Fit is Just Right – Ok, so this is a little more than 4, but still, very important. With so many wedding details and so much going on, it can be tempting to fit the dress “good enough”, call it a day, and move onto your next to-do item. But it’s definitely worth it to take the extra time and make sure the dress fits just right. For example, if you’re going for a strapless dress, you don’t want to be doing the chicken-dance, pulling your dress up every 10 minutes. It’s uncomfortable, not fun, and not a great look.
While they may seem simple, wedding dresses take some effort to master. With these tips, we hope you’ll be able to confidently rock your dress on your big day!
