Routine gets boring. If you and your significant other have been cooped up inside the last few weeks, watching the same old shows, walking around the same old block, and playing the same old songs on your beloved saxophone, you’re probably ready for a change. We’ve compiled this list of cool games and fun activities for you two to shake things up a bit!
Question Games – You might think you know everything about your partner, but you’d be surprised! There are literally hundreds of fun lists online of questions/prompts to ask each other. A lot of them are things you wouldn’t normally think to ask, like these, from the website Society Letters’s list: “If you were in a witness protection program, what would be your new name and where would you go?” “What song would you sing for your American Idol audition?” “What scene from a non-horror movie scared you as a child?”
With so many different lists, and so many questions on them, these could keep you entertained for hours, as you go down rabbit holes with each other and get lost in the conversation. Let’s say your SO answers the American Idol question with “Welcome to the Jungle” by Guns n Roses. This could lead to a discussion on 1980s hair metal, which could lead to a conversation about spandex tights, which could lead to a conversation about the textile industry in general, and before you know it, five hours have passed, and you’ve covered a whole world of topics! If you hit record on your phone during this, then you’ve technically made a podcast.
Movie Elimination Game – Approximately 10,000 movies are made every second of every day. There are so many! Such as: Titanic. With this many options, how is a couple supposed to decide what to watch together? We recommend the veto game: collect a handful of options, and then each person takes a turn veto-ing a movie, until only one is left. (For example: Titanic.) This is democracy in action!
Wheel of Food – Another great activity when you just can’t decide. If you two want to order take-out/delivery, but every option sounds good, make a paper wheel with all your favorite restaurants on it. Give it a spin and order from wherever the wheel lands!
Low tech version for those without the engineering degree required to make a paper wheel: pull a name (or a coupon) from a hat.
Lowest tech version for those without hats to pull from: write down the restaurants and have your partner close their eyes and point.
Slap Cup – This is different than the drinking game Slap Cup! This version was pioneered by one of the team members here at Tower Studios. Two or more people go outside with a plastic solo cup and slap it into the air. The group attempts to keep it off the ground for as long as possible, counting how many times people slap the cup. (An individual can only hit the cup once in a row!) Game ends once someone misses and the cup hits the ground. It’s simple, fun, and is great cardio. The current known record is 145 slaps, with a group of nine people. Though some Slap Cup historians insist the 200 mark was crossed at some point, but if that’s true, the exact number is lost to time. See if you can beat the record!
Design Your Own Board Game – This is a fun activity for any couple. Write the rulebook, design and produce the artwork, make characters and cards by hand, test and revise through hours and hours of trial games. Finally, sell it to a big board game company and wallow in the dough. You have time. Get started!
These suggestions ought to last you at least until our next blog post comes out. Enjoy, and good luck with your new career as a board game designer!
