When asked to picture a wedding, many of us would imagine a white gown, a veil, a bouquet. It is second-nature that the wedding includes breaking a glass, jumping a broom, tossing the garter. But where did these traditions come from?
The tradition I want to talk about this week is that of the wedding veil. The wedding veil is one of the most widely recognized wedding traditions and has played a part in Christian, Jewish, Muslim, and Hindu ceremonies.
Many faith traditions and cultures originally used a wedding veil as a representation of modesty and of the purity of the bride, but the Romans used veils during a wedding for another purpose entirely: to ward off evil spirits.
The wedding veil also makes many people think of royalty or nobility. Queen Victoria’s wedding in 1840 prompted a resurgence in the popularity of wearing a wedding veil.
So whether you want to emulate the royals, honor your faith tradition, or simply make extra sure you are super safe from evil spirits, a veil can be a beautiful addition to your wedding look!
